- “Community And War Chest Campaign Opens Next Week … Always an extraordinary event for the two cities, this year's campaign for the Bangor-Brewer Community and War Chest is an effort that exceeds all the previous campaigns. This year we are at war--not alone the perennial war against under-privilege, ill health, poverty, and broken homes against which the Community Chest has always wrestled. Today our Nation–our Allies–are fighting for the maintenance of the life to which we've been accustomed–for our very existence. War makes this year's Community Chest the biggest philanthropic project Bangor and Brewer have ever had…Monday's Community and War Chest campaign will mean a one-time, single solicitation of contributions for 15 of our own organizations and institutions and for six of the relief and welfare organizations directly connected with the welfare of our own fighting men and for the relief and assistance of our Allies. Our Bangor and Brewer beneficiaries of the Community Chest are: For the care of health and children: Bangor Anti-Tuberulosis Association, Bangor District Nursing Association Women's Field Army for Control of Cancer, the Good Samaritan Home. For character building: the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, Y.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., Bangor Hebrew Community Center. For the care of families and individual service: Brewer Community Service Council, Catholic Welfare Council, Family Welfare Society, Hebrew Welfare Society, Salvation Army, Travelers Aid Society. The six war relief agencies for which the Community Chest will this year solicit contributions are the United Service Organization (USO), the Navy Relief Society, the British War Relief, the Russian War Relief, the Greek War Relief, and the Polish War Relief.” (Source: Bangor Daily News, October 10, 1942)
