- For men with ambition, the Navy offers an ASSURED FUTURE. The inducements, unsurpassed anywhere, demand the attention of every alert youth INVESTIGATE AND COMPARE! SPECIALIZED TRAINING in more than fifty useful trades; Adequate Pay; Promotion; Travel to interesting foreign shores; Wholesome Food; Expert Medical and Dental Treatment; and, in later years, RETIREMENT with a pension guaranteed by your Government. Participation in keenly contested athletic events insure strong bodies, while well stocked libraries develop healthy minds, and moving pictures and other entertainments provide amusement. Enlist in the U.S. Navy to enjoy this balanced life and attractive future. TRAINING In addition to fitting a man for duty on shipboard and developing the valuable qualities of leadership, efficiency and accuracy, deserving men, with or without previous experience, are eligible to com-pete for courses of instruction in any one of the numerous trade schools. Graduates of these schools, numbering more than five thousand yearly, have a foundation on which the career of a finished artisan can be built. PAY Ranges from twenty-one dollars a month for apprentice seaman to one hundred fifty-seven dollars a month for chief petty officers. (The pay of apprentice seamen is automatically increased to thirty-six dollars per month, after four months' service.) PROMOTIONS Are continually being made to supply trained specialists for the modern men-of-war. Over fifty thousand men are advanced to the next higher rating yearly. Advancement depends on a man's efficiency, performance of duty, and ability. FOOD That is good, wholesome and plain, is prepared in clean, modern galleys. Menus, prepared by experts, provide savory meals, carefully balanced in food value. HEALTH Of the men is of primary importance. Medical and dental care is furnished free of charge. Naval hospitals maintained ashore have the finest equipment available, while the ships of the Fleet are equipped with modern Medical Departments. However, the percentage of sick men in the Navy is lower than in any other occupation. SECURITY For the future is assured. After twenty years' naval service a man may be transferred to the Fleet Reserve and receive as retainer pay one-half the base pay of his rating. After thirty years' naval service a man may be placed on the retired list with a substantial pension.
