Description: The keel for a new salvage vessel was laid on 24 November 1948 at the Basalt Rock Company, Napa, California. Launched on 1 April 1943, the ship was sponsored by Mrs. Benjamin Elliot, wife of the assistant officer in charge of civil construction, and was henceforth known as USS CABLE. CABLE began her career as a rescue and salvage ship at 1400 on 6 March 1944, at commissioning ceremonies along side the Southern Pacific Dock, Vallejo, California.
