- The Bangor Water Works were built in 1875-1876 following a State act to supply Bangor with a reliable source of clear water and confront the constant problem of sewage. The Water Works, which also contained a dam, was designed as a source of power and transportation as much as of drinking water, and the $154,000 project included a wheelhouse, sluice, and fishway. The pumping house in the photograph was designed by the Holly Manufacturing Company of Lockport, New York, and shows a four-story tall steam stack in the background.
