Ralph A. Scherer. Private U.S. Army. 14 May 1905 - 19 October 1942. Enlisted February 1942. Died at the Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C., of illness contracted in the service. Graduated, Bangor High School, 1922, where he was class prophet, R.O.T.C. member, an editor of "The Oracle", and a second honors student. Before enlisting he was a clerk in the shoe manufacturing business.

Harold G. Eaton. Captain, Merchant Marine (Naval Reserve), Commanding S.S. Raphael Semmes. 15 April 1884 - 28 June 1942. He went down with his ship, torpedoed at 20 30' N-60 30' W, while returning from delivering munitions to Russia. At sea from the age of sixteen, he commanded the U.S. Transport Buford in World War I and the steamship Raphael Semmes, War Shipping Board, in World War II. Mariners Medal.

On duty at Nichols Field, Philippine Islands, at outbreak of war, having enlisted, September 1940. On Corregidor at its fall. Died in Japanese prison somewhere on Luzon. Served continuously on ships Lunson, Herbert Yarnall and Langley until Langley was sunk off Tjilijap, Java, 27 February 1942. Rescued by Tanker Pecos. Killed in action with her. Aubrey Francis Withee. Ordinary Seaman, Merchant Marine. Wiper, S.S. Pan Massachusetts. 16 February 1908 - 19 February 1942. He was lost when the S.S. Pan Massachusetts was torpedoed 20 miles off Cape Canaveral, Florida 28. 27 N x 80.08 W by U-128 (Heyse). Carrying gasoline and oil the ship burned and sank. Debater, essayist, and National Honor Society member at Bangor High School where he graduated, 1939, he entered the business of market gardening, but soon enlisted.
