- The children are the hope and the future of Belgium. Queen Elizabeth would preserve their precious lives. She asked the American Red Cross to help. Her appeal for a children's hospital at the front was immediately answered. The Queen also asked that a house-to-house visiting service by American and Belgian nurses be established. Such a service was established, with the Red Cross in charge. As a result, 15,000 Belgian children are healthier and happier. It was a privilege and an honor for the American Red Cross to respond to such a call. In one Red Cross home alone 400 Belgian children are cared for. To them, the Red Cross has become the "Greatest Mother in the World."
