Preface. With volume two of the Directory of Bangor and Brewer, we take pleasure in presenting a new map of both cities, which for accuracy and detail can nowhere else be found, it showing the latest changes and street extensions; also one-quarter mile circles, having the Custom House building as a center. When it could be ascertained, we have given the present residence of people whose names appeared in the last issue and have since moved away, and the date of death of those whose name appeared in the last issue. We have adopted for the present volume a new departure, which will commend itself to all who use the book. Instead of repeating the same surname many times we print it once at the head of the list. This style is now being adopted by all leading directory publishers, and gives entire satisfaction. As this year two directories are contending for patronage among our merchants, it might be well to call attention to the seasons the canvass for the different books were made. The Boston parties made their house-to-house canvass in January and February. Knowing that the largest number of removals occur in the spring, we waited until May and June before making our canvass, and have been able to correct the changes which have occurred since the canvass, so that in the present volume the residences are correct to date, and nearly six months later than our competitors.
