- Maine's Centennial: This year Maine will celebrate the hundredth anniversary of her admission to the Union. A brief review of her history would not be out of place at this time. Maine was probably discovered by the Vikings when they sailed down the coast of this country, about the year 1000. The first English settlement in Maine was in the early part of the seventeenth century, about the same time as the settlement of Massachusetts.
